Players can even check ammunition counts by physically checking the weapons, adding another layer of subtle immersion and making Gloomwood feel like BioShock or Dishonored. Players can also pick up various items to throw, smash, or use with the game's detailed sound mechanics to distract and confuse enemies. Rather than using a screen to display weapons and equipment, the player's inventory is contained in an in-world suitcase that the protagonist throws on the ground and opens up to rearrange and check items. One particular example of this is in the way that Gloomwood presents its inventory system.

Gloomwood also is chock full of interactive and immersive details, as immersive simulations often are. Much like Dishonored, Gloomwood often feels like an evolution of the classic Thief gameplay, with its stealth-action feeling just as exciting as it did way back in the '90s. Guns and projectile weaponry might be the first instinct for players, but many encounters can be solved by careful stealth and the sharp edge of the cane sword as it silently takes down enemies. The stealth system tracks both sound and light visibility, much like Thief did, making Gloomwood's stealth mechanics feel realistic and exciting. Players can sneak through the city, leaning around corners and eavesdropping on enemies to gather valuable information, or even mantle up ledges, allowing the protagonist to get a valuable advantage on unsuspecting foes.

The city environment is a sprawling metropolis that encourages freeform exploration, giving players the sense that there is always another secret to be found, another route to take. Players must know when to strike, when to fight and when to flee as Gloomwood often presents new and exciting ways to navigate the city just around the next corner. Players can wield a Victorianesque cane sword, high caliber revolver, collapsable shotgun, traps and even a harpoon rifle. Luckily for players, the assassin is armed to the teeth with an arsenal of period-appropriate and excellently designed fantastical weaponry. Gloomwood's protagonist isn't a master thief concerned with avoiding danger but a master assassin who takes all threats head-on. You can keep a few things equipped like your cane sword or revolver, but anything extraneous requires some safety to reasonably access. The gameplay is where Gloomwood begins to stand on its own feet.

The dragging system seems like it could split the difference nicely between a convenient hotkey bar and the laborious task of actually fishing crap out of a briefcase. You can see the player do that in the video with the bottle they throw to distract a prison guard. You can drag and rotate items around to make room as needed, but you can also drag those items outside the case to place them in the world. Gloomwood has major Bloodborne vibes.Īs a big fan of Dishonored and Prey 2017, I'm extremely into the diegetic inventory that lives inside the character's briefcase. Like in the demo, the grungy polygonal enemies and simplistic animations really work against all the dark hallways and eerie noises. And boy howdy, are those systems a feast for the eyes. From what I can tell, the clip must be from the very beginning of the game as the player is getting acquainted with the basics of stealth, combat, and the inventory.
